The long-awaited Five Nights at Freddy’s movie is finally coming to theaters and streaming, and Chuck E. Cheese is making sure to cash in on the closeness of the two brands.

Five Nights at Freddy’s began as an indie horror game developed by Scott Cawthorn. It centers on a security guard trying to survive the night shift at a restaurant with haunted animatronics that come to life. The game was successful and spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs. The film adaptation (which is being produced by Blumhouse) was announced in 2015. However, it spent many years stuck in development due to several factors (including director Chris Columbus leaving). The film will now be released in time for Halloween this year.

The family restaurant and entertainment center Chuck E. Cheese is hosting an October promotion called “Five Nights of Fun,” referencing the Five Nights at Freddy’s video game franchise and upcoming movie without having any direct relation to it. There is also a “Five Nights of Fun” movie poster strikingly similar to the real one. The setting for Five Nights at Freddy’s is Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, which, much like Chuck E. Cheese, is a family restaurant and entertainment center. Chuck E. Cheese also used to have animatronics, but now they employ people in costumes. Cawthorn likely drew inspiration from Chuck E. Cheese when developing the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise.

Along with the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie poster and event name, there is a picture of what Chuck E. Cheese employees can and can’t say about the event circling the internet. It is made clear that this is not an official partnership in any way, but their brand is “naturally being woven into discussions due to the subject matter.” The image also revealed that Chuck E. Cheese will have a big party on the same night as the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie’srelease but is not affiliated with the film.

It makes sense for Chuck E. Cheese to try and capitalize off of the hype around the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie. However, fans of the franchise do not seem to like it. Fans don’t like that Chuck E. Cheese is trying to profit from the movie without promoting it.

Other fans think the whole promotion is odd, considering the grizzly fate of most of the children involved in the Five Nights at Freddy’s lore. It seems like something a company like Chuck E. Cheese would not want any association with.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 27, 2023.
