Overwatch 2 Reveals Sombra Rework, Route 66 Changes for Season 7

Highlights

  • Sombra is getting a significant rework in Overwatch 2 Season 7, including the replacement of her Opportunist passive with a Stealth ability.
  • Sombra’s Translocator will now instantly teleport her wherever it’s thrown, and she will have a new ability called Virus that deals damage over time.
  • Other hero balance changes are also being made in Season 7, including adjustments to Mei, Zarya, Orisa, Roadhog, and more, plus changes to the Route 66 Escort map.

Blizzard has officially pulled the curtain back on the Sombra rework coming to Overwatch 2 when Season 7 launches on October 10. Blizzard has made it clear for quite some time that it was planning on reworking Sombra, but it stopped short of providing specifics about what exactly that rework would entail.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Blizzard has made significant changes to Overwatch 2‘s resident hacker. For example, there once was a time when Sombra’s invisibility was restricted by a timer, but Blizzard changed the character so that she could remain invisible indefinitely. This new rework is quite substantial as well, and it should change the way Overwatch 2 players approach the character.

When Overwatch 2 Season 7 goes live on October 10, fans of the hero shooter can expect Sombra to lose her Opportunist passive. It will be replaced by her Stealth ability, which will now be a passive that starts whenever Sombra is not taking damage, dealing damage, or using her abilities. After the update, Sombra’s Translocator will instantly teleport Sombra to whenever it is thrown. Sombra will also have a new ability called Virus that deals damage over time. Virus damage can be doubled and sped up if used on an enemy that has been hacked. Blizzard also said that additional balance changes will be made to Sombra’s Machine Pistol, Hack, and EMP, though specifics on that end have not been revealed at the time of this writing.

Other hero balance changes are coming in the Overwatch 2 Season 7 update. The big ones will be Mei losing her Deep Chill passive and Zarya’s Projectile Barrier won’t build Ult nearly as fast, though it will still have a faster cooldown. Additional balance changes are on the way for Orisa, Ramattra, Wrecking Ball, Cassidy, Torbjorn, Brigitte, and Illari. The long-awaited Roadhog rework will also be deployed in Season 7, though it won’t be available until later in the season.

Overwatch 2 is changing more than just its heroes with the Season 7 update. The Route 66 Escort map is getting some changes that will make it so attackers have better protection when they leave spawn and get through the first checkpoint.

On top of all this, Overwatch 2 Season 7 will also feature a crossover event with Diablo 4 that includes a limited-time mode and a Lilith Moira skin, the debut of the Samoa Control Map, the return of the Halloween Terror map, and a brand-new Battle Pass to complete. Needless to say, Overwatch 2 Season 7 should keep fans plenty busy while they wait for BlizzCon on November 3, where they will learn about the new Tank hero coming in Season 8.

Overwatch 2 is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
